"THE STORY OF NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL - JESSE MICHAEL ANDERSON- OF ALTON, ILLINOIS"

The case of Jesse Anderson is often overshadowed by the fact that he was killed alongside Jeffrey Dahmer, but his own crime was a major flashpoint for racial tension in Milwaukee during the early 1990s.

Early Life and Family Background

Jesse Michael Anderson was born on May 3, 1957, in Alton, Illinois.

Background: Unlike many notorious criminals, Anderson came from a relatively stable, middle-class background. He was educated and graduated from Elmhurst College in 1979 with a degree in business administration.

Professional Life: He worked as a successful commercial tree surgeon and was a partner in a firm.

Marriage: He was married to Barbara Anderson, with whom he had three young children. To those outside the family, they appeared to be a standard suburban family living in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

The Crime: The Murder of Barbara Anderson (1992)

On April 21, 1992, Jesse and Barbara went to a dinner and a movie at Northridge Mall in Milwaukee. As they left the mall and approached their car, Barbara was brutally stabbed 21 times in the chest, face, and neck. Jesse was also wounded, sustaining four shallow stab wounds to his chest.

Mode of Crime and Deception

Anderson’s crime was not just the murder itself but the elaborate racial hoax he constructed to cover it up:

The Frame-Up: Anderson claimed that two Black men had attacked them, robbed them, and stabbed his wife. He even went so far as to provide a detailed description to the police.

The "Evidence": He presented a Los Angeles Raiders baseball cap he claimed to have knocked off the head of one of the attackers.

Investigation and Findings

The Milwaukee Police Department initially took his claim seriously, leading to a sweep of the neighborhood and the questioning of several Black men based on Anderson's false description. However, the story quickly unraveled:

The Cap: A university student came forward stating that he had sold that exact Raiders cap to Jesse Anderson just days before the murder.

The Weapon: The knife used in the attack was identified as a fishing knife. A clerk at a local surplus store identified Anderson as the man who had purchased that specific knife shortly before the killing.

Physical Evidence: Forensic analysis of the blood spatter on Anderson’s clothing suggested he was the attacker, not a victim trying to defend his wife. His own wounds were determined to be self-inflicted to support his story.

Arrest, Trial, and Verdict

Jesse Anderson was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide.

The Trial: During the trial in August 1992, prosecutors argued that Anderson was a controlling man whose marriage was failing and who wanted to start a new life without the financial burden of a divorce.

Verdict: On August 13, 1992, he was found guilty.

Sentence: He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 60 years.

The Attack and Death

Anderson was sent to Columbia Correctional Institution, the same facility housing Jeffrey Dahmer. Because Anderson had attempted to frame Black men for his crime, he was deeply despised by the minority population within the prison system.

November 28, 1994: Anderson, Dahmer, and another inmate, Christopher Scarver, were assigned to clean the prison gymnasium bathrooms.

The Assault: Left unsupervised for approximately 20 minutes, Scarver used a 20-inch metal bar to beat both men.

Outcome: While Dahmer died almost instantly, Anderson survived the initial beating. He was rushed to a hospital but had suffered irreversible brain damage. He was removed from life support and died two days later on November 30, 1994.

Aftermath and Current Status

The aftermath of the Anderson case was significant due to the racial profiling it encouraged. His false accusations mirrored the "Charles Stuart" case in Boston, where a white man also murdered his wife and blamed a Black stranger, causing deep trauma to the local Black community.

Current Status: The case is closed. Jesse Anderson is deceased, and his killer, Christopher Scarver, remains in prison serving multiple life sentences for the deaths of both Anderson and Dahmer.
