The events of June 6, 1993, in Prasanthi Nilayam—the ashram of the spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba—remain one of the most controversial and shrouded chapters in the history of modern Indian spiritual movements.
What began as a quiet Sunday evening ended in a violent confrontation inside the private quarters of the ashram, leaving six people dead and sparking decades of debate.
The Breach: The Night of June 6
At approximately 9:00 PM, four young men, all long-time devotees and former students of the ashram’s university, entered the Prashanthi Mandir. They were led by Vijay Prabhu and included his brother Ravindra Prabhu, along with E.K. Suresh and N. Jagannatham.
Armed with knives, the group made their way toward the upper floor, where Sathya Sai Baba’s private living quarters (the Prashanthi Vedika) were located.
The Initial Confrontation
The intruders were intercepted by several of Sai Baba’s close attendants. A violent struggle ensued in the hallway:
Radhakrishna Menon, the personal attendant to Sai Baba, was stabbed and killed while trying to block the intruders.
Sai Kumar, another ashram staff member, was also fatally stabbed.
Two other attendants, V.K. Nair and Vishnu Bhat, sustained serious injuries but survived.
During the chaos, an alarm was raised. Sathya Sai Baba escaped the immediate area through a back staircase or a side room (accounts vary slightly) and remained unharmed. The four assailants then retreated into a room on the upper floor and barricaded themselves inside.
The Police Response and the "Encounter"
Local police from the Puttaparthi station arrived on the scene shortly after the initial killings. What happened next is the focal point of the legal and ethical controversy surrounding the case.
The Stand-off: The four intruders remained locked in the room for several hours.
The deaths: Police eventually entered the room. According to the official police report, the four men attacked the officers with knives, forcing the police to open fire in self-defense. All four intruders—Vijay Prabhu, Ravindra Prabhu, E.K. Suresh, and N. Jagannatham—were shot dead on the spot.
Aftermath and Controversies
The incident sent shockwaves through the global community of Sai Baba devotees. However, the official narrative was immediately met with skepticism from the public and the families of the deceased.
1. The "Extrajudicial" Allegations
The primary controversy involves the police shooting. Critics and some witnesses alleged that the four men were unarmed by the time police entered the room and could have been apprehended alive. Rumors persisted that the "encounter" was staged to ensure the intruders could not testify about their motives.
2. The Missing Motive
The motive of the four men remains a mystery. They were not "outsiders"; they were dedicated devotees who had spent years serving the ashram.
Official Theory: The police suggested it was a botched kidnapping or assassination attempt fueled by internal frustrations.
Alternative Theory: Some supporters of the deceased claimed the men were actually trying to warn Sai Baba about corruption or power struggles among the ashram’s trust members and were framed when things turned violent.
3. The Closure of the Case
In the years following, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) eventually took over aspects of the inquiry. However, the case was largely closed due to a lack of evidence and the death of all primary suspects. The police officers involved in the shooting were eventually cleared of wrongdoing by the courts, citing self-defense.
Legacy of the Incident
The 1993 murders marked a turning point for Prasanthi Nilayam. Following the event:
Security was Permanently Heightened: The ashram transitioned from an open, accessible space to a high-security complex with metal detectors and armed guards.
Media Scrutiny: The event became a cornerstone for several BBC documentaries and critical journalistic pieces regarding the lack of transparency within the Sathya Sai Central Trust.
Despite the violence of that night, the ashram continued to grow in the following decades, though the events of June 6 remain a somber, unanswered question in the history of Puttaparthi.
