"THE MURDER OF - VALERIE GRAVES - [MIDSOMER MURDER] IN SUSSEX"

The murder of Valerie Graves, often referred to by the media as the "Midsomer Murder" due to the picturesque and affluent setting of Bosham, was a case that baffled detectives for nearly six years. It eventually led to one of the largest voluntary DNA screenings in British history.

The Victim: Valerie Graves

Valerie Graves was a 55-year-old grandmother and talented artist who had recently moved back to Sussex from Scotland to be closer to her family. At the time of her death, she was house-sitting a £1.6 million coastal property in Bosham, West Sussex, while the owners were away on holiday. She was celebrating her birthday with her mother, sister, and her sister's partner just days before she was killed.

The Culprit: Cristian Sabău

At the time of the murder, Cristian Sabău was a 22-year-old Romanian national working as a laborer in the area. He had previously worked at the house where Valerie was staying and knew the layout. On the night of the crime, he was motivated by a desperate and poorly planned attempt to steal money to pay off a debt.

The Crime: December 30, 2013

Valerie was sleeping in a ground-floor bedroom when Sabău broke in through a rear door, armed with a claw hammer.

The Attack: Sabău claimed he didn't expect anyone to be in the room. When Valerie woke up, he panicked and launched a "sustained and exertion-filled" attack, striking her repeatedly in the head with the hammer.

The Discovery: Valerie was found dead in her bed the next morning by her sister. The level of violence was so extreme that police initially struggled to find a clear motive, as very little had been stolen.

The Investigation and Findings

The investigation, titled Operation Ensign, became one of the most complex in Sussex Police history.

The DNA Breakthrough: Forensic teams found a partial DNA profile on the sliding door and the murder weapon (a hammer found in the nearby Millstream). However, the profile did not match anyone on the UK national database.

Mass DNA Screening (2015): In an unprecedented move, police requested voluntary DNA samples and fingerprints from over 2,700 men who lived or worked in the Bosham area. While Sabău had worked nearby, he had already fled back to Romania, so he was not among those tested.

The Tip-Off: The breakthrough finally came in 2018 when Sabău’s ex-wife contacted Romanian authorities. She revealed that he had confessed the killing to her, haunted by the "ghost" of the woman he had murdered.

Arrest and Extradition

Following the tip-off, Sussex Police worked with the Romanian National Police and Interpol.

July 2019: Sabău was arrested at his home in Dej, Romania.

Extradition: He was extradited to the UK later that month to face trial. Upon his arrest, he admitted to the burglary but initially tried to downplay the intentionality of the murder.

The Verdict: November 2019

Cristian Sabău appeared at Hove Crown Court. Faced with the DNA evidence and his own previous admissions to his family, he pleaded guilty to murder.

The Sentence: He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years and 272 days. The judge described the killing as a "cowardly attack on a defenseless woman."

Aftermath and Current Status

The case left a deep scar on the quiet community of Bosham and Valerie's family, who spent years in a state of "limbo" not knowing who the killer was.

Sussex Police: The case is cited as a landmark example of international cooperation and the effectiveness of mass DNA intelligence-led policing.

The Graves Family: They have since campaigned for better support for families of murder victims and have spoken about the "total relief" of finally seeing justice served.

Today (2026): Cristian Sabău remains in a high-security UK prison. Under the terms of his sentencing, he will not be eligible for parole until approximately 2043, at which point he will likely be deported back to Romania.
